It was August 2019, and I was driving a group of travelers from Europe who had planned what should have been the perfect Bali getaway. After months of online research, they had booked three different accommodations across the island, each promising a specific vibe.
But when they arrived, the reality didn’t quite match their expectations.
The first place they hoped would be a quiet, beginner-friendly surf retreat turned out to be a highly energetic social hostel. The second place, chosen for peaceful yoga, was situated right next to a busy ongoing project. The third was a beautiful villa, but the Wi-Fi couldn’t support their remote work needs.
They weren’t bad places—they just weren’t the right places for their specific goals.
As someone born here who has worked in the Bali tourism industry for years—from being a freelance guide to running a local cooking class in Ubud—I, Wayan Jhon, saw this frustration frequently.
